Richard Herring muses about utility companies

I've been there, I know what he's thinking.

Just read his latest blog entry.

Incidentally, we once had three utility companies supplying us with gas and electricity; that was because when we decided to switch to nPower, they got our address wrong, so we ended up paying for next door’s gas. It took me months to realise this, because I was just blithely paying everything by direct debit and ignoring bills. All three kinds. What a moron I was.

(When I finally realised the problem, phoned them up and eventually, after a lot of effort, got them to cancel our account and send us a cheque for the money we shouldn’t have paid them, well, once the cheque arrived, did I cash it? No, I put it on a pile of paperwork that I then threw away. I then prevaricated for months before asking for a replacement, claiming that it never got delivered. And then did I walk into my bank, which is just over the road, to cash the cheque? No. I posted it.)
