Why Schwarzenegger won't win
"A series of corrosively divisive events have made Americans choose sides to a degree that has no recent precedent in American politics. […] engaged citizens are defending their cultural and ideological turf and are increasingly distrustful of the people and institutions that don't share their mores. It's a climate, in other words, in which great fame or a winning personality is less likely to trump people's deeper concerns about the state of the culture and the direction the country is heading."
Michael Tomasky writes about Arnold Schwarzenegger’s campaign, and more generally about the up-coming US presidential election (only 15 months before they vote!) - echoing other reports I’ve seen about the great ideological divide we apparently have in the US at the moment. Makes for interesting reading. Via Eschaton.
An interesting word in the citation above is “engaged”. Given that the Dean campaign is trying to get people involved who aren’t normally involved in politics, it will be interesting to see how things evolve in the next year.
