Who knows the Shardmaiden’s name?
(It’s clearly not “Shardmaiden”, for instance)
We know of the Shardmaiden because she shattered her heart into a thousand pieces, but clearly that wasn’t the name that people knew her to have previously. (Why are you called the dead woman when you’re not dead yet?) It’s arguably also a misnomer because while sitting on a rock singing beautifully is the sort of mermaid/siren thing that you’d associate with young women, Raven’s Purge says she decided to shatter her ruby after her many, many children died, which puts her squarely in the “mother” section of maiden/mother/crone.
More importantly, though: who still knows her previous name?
Obviously, Gemelda, Neyd, Nebulos, Viridia, Algared and Iridne remember; ancient elves like Kalman Rodenfell will also. Who else?
It is said that members of the Order of Maidens, who have a shard fixed to their forehead, have “extraordinary magical powers” but there’s no actual rules that underpin this. Maybe the answer is that as part of becoming a member of the Order of Maidens, and getting a shard permanently attached to you, is that you are taught the true name of the Shardmaiden, and you can use that to ask her for aid and advice?
Finally, and least importantly: is there a canonical source for what her previous name was?
