Fewer than 24 hours until war?

The LA Times realises that it's not as easy as it was in 1991. CNN, meanwhile, excitedly talks about "Showdown Iraq".

Well, the result of the “last-gasp attempt at diplomacy” in the Azores has ended with an ultimatum of, er, less than 24 hours to destroy all the weapons of mass destruction which Saddam Hussein may well not have.

I randomly went to a major US newspaper to see what the US media was saying. Well, here’s the LA Times’ analysis:

In 1991, specialists note, the goal of U.S. intervention never wavered: Free Kuwait. Twelve years later, the Bush administration has attempted to justify military action with a number of arguments – ranging from Hussein’s alleged stocks of weapons of mass destruction to terrorist links to human rights violations – with marginal results.

CNN, on the other hand, has tower ads advertising “Showdown Iraq”, which, to me, is the best sign yet that Chicago is going to sweep the Oscars. (Note, incidentally, how they use the photo of Saddam Hussein wearing a hat and coat and holding a shotgun, as if to paint him as a 30s era gangster.)
