How to disable (or, possibly, blow up) a nuclear bomb

JWZ reports on a new scheme to, basically, build a huge particle accelerator that could send neutrons through the Earth and hit nuclear bombs, thus disabling them. It’s early days, there’s plenty of mentions of terms like “an order of magnitude greater than current technology”, and of course, as befits atomic physics, there’s the possibility that the bomb might explode if they miscalculate. (“Maybe we’ll ignite the atmosphere,” anyone?)

I particular like his remark, in the comments:

If those high energy physics dudes were really on the ball, they’d figure out some way to apply their work to porn. That’s where the money is.
